The New Classical Venezuelan Sound
After a memorable 2023-24 Season as Jeunesse Featured Ensemble with more than 40 concerts all over Austria –including the debut of “Cambur Pin-Tón” in the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Mozarteum Stiftung– and the release of their first Album with the Viennese label Waves Affaire at the ORF RadioKulturhaus, the Tocuyito Trio gets ready for the world premiere of Ángel Hernández-Lovera’s “Triple Concertante” with Orchestra in May 2025.
Founded in Vienna in 2018, the musical roots of the Ensemble –Dalina Ugarte, Santo Scala and Joseph Ávila– reach deep into the folk music of their home country Venezuela. On their various concert programs, the trio explores an exuberant sound world that is both classical and innovative, evoking the musical diversity of their land. The different arrangements and compositions in their repertoire are an ever expanding collection of character pieces, miniatures and more ambitious works and storytelling projects: this counterpoint of nostalgic vibes and polyrhythmical vibrancy is the musical signature of the Trio.
The members of the Tocuyito Trio are Alumni of the Jeunesse-Oorkaan Academy. The Ensemble is proud to work with the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Organization.

The trio takes us on a colorful journey into the magical and spirited world of Venezuelan sounds and rhythms. Viva Banana is a staged concert with explosive moments and exotic soundscapes. It tells of breathtaking sunsets, the friendliness and energy of the people, the best fruits, a diverse nature and the joy that in Venezuela everyone can sing and dance the way they love.

Valencia (b. 1995).

dalinaugarte.comPassionate and multifaceted violinist, her repertoire ranges from Classical to Venezuelan Traditional Music, as well as improvisation and Contemporary Music. In 2019 she completed her master's degree at the Mozarteum Salzburg with Benjamin Schmid and since then she has been not only a regular guest of the Camerata Salzburg, but also an independent artist devoted to creative, interdisciplinary and intercultural projects such as the Tocuyito Trio, Bululú, The Pool of Invention Ensemble, Synesthetic Project and Black Page Orchestra. She is a nature lover and was certified as a hiking guide by VAVÖ in 2022, which gave rise to her latest artistic project “Caminos”, which combines concerts and hikes.

San Cristóbal (b. 1990).
@josephavilagPianist and composer, based in Vienna since 2010, where he studied at the University for Music and Performing Arts under Lilya Zilberstein, Markus Hadulla and Ferhan Önder. His current focus on re-imagining the Venezuelan soundscape and spirit is at the core of his projects (Tocuyito Trio, Bululú); In the summer of 2023 he released his debut EP MMXIII with his own compositions for solo piano. As an arranger and composer, his music has been featured on Austrian State Radio and Television as well as Vienna Classical Radio, and has been performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Soloists' Ensemble with bassoonist Sophie Dervaux. Co-creator of the Feature Documentary "Hommage à Heinrich" (2023, IDAGIO).

Trujillo (b. 1998).
@santocellistItalian-Venezuelan cellist, received his first musical impulses from his father, a cellist, violin maker and conductor. From the age of 11 he devoted himself to playing the cello and studied with Santo Scala Bastidas, Florin Safner (Romania) and Valmore Nieves, among others. Through his involvement in the social project "El Sistema" in Venezuela, he was integrated into various orchestras at an early age. In 2017 he joined the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, which was conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and José Antonio Abreu. He thrilled audiences as a chamber musician at the 2020 Ilumina Festival in Brazil. After moving to Brazil, he became part of the "Academy of the State Symphony Orchestra of São Paulo" and received instruction from Rodrigo Andrade, the orchestra's first cellist. In 2021 he was involved in the "Academy for the Impact Through Music" in Salzburg. He is currently studying with Professor Julian Arp at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Since 2023, Santo Scala has been the cellist of the Tocuyito Trio.
