The New Venezuelan Classical Sound
TOCUYITO — violinist Dalina Ugarte and pianist Joseph Ávila — breaks through labels and genres with an exuberant sound world that is both classical and current, evoking the musical diversity of their home country Venezuela with charisma and virtuosity.
Highlights of the 2025–26 season include the premiere of their new concert program CATATUMBO in the Mozart Saal of the Wiener Konzerthaus, as well international debuts at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Elbphilharmonie (Spring 2027) with Viva Banana (in trio with cellist Santo Scala, directed by Caecilia Thunnissen, produced by Oorkaan/Jeunesse). They will also appear at the Philharmonie Luxembourg in a co-production with the Wiener Musikverein, performing in trio with percussionist Amir Wahba.
Founded in Vienna in 2018, TOCUYITO draws its musical roots from the rich folk traditions of Venezuela, as showcased in their debut album Tocuyito Trio (with Santo Scala, released in 2024 by Waves Affaire). Their repertoire is an ever-expanding mosaic of original compositions, arrangements, and commissioned works, weaving together violin and piano with a variety of Venezuelan instruments — including the cuatro, bandola, maracas, and tambores.
TOCUYITO has appeared in Austria’s leading concert halls, has been named Featured Ensemble of the Jeunesse, nominated for the Young Music Awards as Best Small Ensemble (Viva Banana), featured on Austrian Radio and Television (ORF), and performed at the Vienna City Hall for Kultursommer Wien.
